Failures can be induced by a variety of causes, including fatigue, embrittlement, tensile overload, and quality of the materials used. Microscopic analysis of the fractured surfaces provides indispensable information on the root cause of the failure. The unique "zoom-box" feature of Perception, and the tight integration of SEM and EDX technologies, enables the analyst to quickly home in on the root cause.

While the root cause of failures is often found at the microscopic scale, fracture surfaces can be orders of magnitude larger. The ASPEX with its large sample area is well suited for the analysis of fracture surfaces.
